چکیده

Electron tunneling experiments involving Hg-Hg junctions incorporating two alkanethiolate monolayers are described. Formation of a symmetric junction (Hg-SCn-CnS-Hg) is accomplished by bringing in contact two small (3 × 10-3 cm2) mercury drop electrodes in a 5-20% (v/v) hexadecane solution of an alkanethiol. Formation of asymmetric junctions (Hg-SCn-CmS-Hg) and junctions containing n-alkane-3thiopropanamide bilayers are also described. Tunneling currents in the junctions were measured for voltage biases extending to (1.5 V. The currents decrease exponentially with the junction thickness yielding the tunneling decay constant, â ) 0.89 ( 0.1 per CH2. The decay constant exhibits only a weak dependence on the voltage bias suggesting that electron tunneling follows a through-bond mechanism. Tunneling currents in the n-alkane-3-thiopropanamide bilayer junctions were larger than those in alkanethiolate junctions with the same number of atoms suggesting that introduction of an amide group increases the strength of the electronic coupling through these types of σ-bonded systems.

Mercury–mercury tunneling junctions Part II. Structure and stability of symmetric alkanethiolate bilayers and their effect on the rate of electron tunneling

We have investigated electrical properties of symmetric alkanethiolate bilayer junctions formed by contacting two hanging mercury drop electrodes each coated initially with a single alkanethiolate monolayer. Using potentiodynamic, current transient and ac impedance methods, we have shown that the initial, largely all-trans structure of the bilayers becomes disordered with time as a result of th...

Through-Bond and Chain-to-Chain Coupling. Two Pathways in Electron Tunneling through Liquid Alkanethiol Monolayers on Mercury Electrodes

Formation, structure, and properties of alkanethiolate monolayers on micrometrically driven hanging mercury drop electrodes were investigated electrochemically. Alkanethiols with the chain length from C8 to C18 were shown to form densely packed (ca. 20.3 Å2/molecule for C12SH), perpendicularly oriented monolayers on mercury in a process involving two electron oxidation of Hg to form mercuric th...

Room Temperature Hydrogen Sensor Based on Single-Electron Tunneling Between Palladium Nanoparticles

In this paper, we present the results of single-electron tunneling in two-dimensional (2D) hexagonal closed packed arrays of palladium nanoparticles. After inspecting the emergence of Coulomb blockade phenomena, we demonstrate the possibilities of using these arrays as a single-electron tunneling based hydrogen sensor. We assumed arrays of palladium nanoparticles with diameters of 3.5 and 6...

Low - frequency noise and inelastic tunneling spectroscopy in Fe ( 1 1 0 ) / MgO ( 1 1 1 ) / Fe ( 1 1 0 ) epitaxial magnetic tunnel junctions

We report on tunnelling magnetoresistance (TMR), current–voltage (IV) characteristics and low-frequency noise in epitaxially grown Fe(1 1 0)/MgO(1 1 1)/Fe(1 1 0) magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs) with dimensions from 2 2 to 20 20mm. The evaluated MgO energy barrier (0.5070.08 eV), the barrier width (13.170.5 Å) as well as the resistance times area product (771MOmm) show relatively small variatio...

Distance-dependent electron hopping conductivity and nanoscale lithography of chemically-linked gold monolayer protected cluster films

Films of monolayer protected Au clusters (MPCs) with mixed alkanethiolate and -carboxylate alkanethiolate monolayers, linked together by carboxylate–Cu2+–carboxylate bridges, exhibit average edge-to-edge cluster spacings that vary with the numbers of methylene segments in the alkanethiolate ligand as determined by a combined atomic force microscopy (AFM)/UV-Vis spectroscopy method. The electron...
